Identifying and Overcoming Barriers to Cybersecurity

This presentation gives examples of how economics affect firms' cybersecurity initiatives and presents the theoretical and practical application of cybersecurity management in firms. Incentives may have a significant impact on cybersecurity protection; those with an ability to protect their organization may not if there’s no incentive to do so. While private cybersecurity investment is not up to par, it is higher than ever before. Instituting policies may be the key to effectively promoting cybersecurity. For instance, disclosure of data breaches is a widely accepted intervention approach as many breaches have been hidden in the past.  In theory, firms manage cybersecurity using a risk management approach. However, in practice, firms may use frameworks and quantitative metrics to improve and measure operational security.
